Meet the Team: Gavin - Code Optimiser

Name: Gavin Cox

Role: Web Developer / Code Optimiser

How long have you worked at MPX? Two years 🎉

Describe your job in three words:
Code, Learn, Improve.

Best thing about being part of the MPX Team?
Knowing that we have a great team with a wide range of skills that cover the bases to get the job done.

What’s the coolest thing you’re working on right now?
I’m looking into PassKeys right now which aims to eliminate login passwords entirely and uses alternative authentication methods like fingerprint scanner, facial recognition etc.

What’s the most exciting part of your current job role?
Being part of a ‘bigger picture’ and knowing that my part of that is to push MPX as a codebase as far into the future as is possible.

What did you want to grow up to be when you were a kid?
I didn’t really know back then. The Internet didn’t exist (but was accurately predicted in school books of the time) but I did spend a lot my time using computers (TRS-80 and BBC Micro), so I guess it was always going to be a ‘tech’ of some kind.

Do you have any hidden talents or skills? What are they? I used to do a lot with car audio and detailing, inspired by TV shows like ‘Knight Rider’ and even competed in national competitions for a couple of years. I maintain an interest in 12V electronics but to a lesser degree since modern car entertainment became so ‘integrated’ - the focus now shifted mainly to camper vans and solar power generation.

Tell us something interesting about you? I survived a dog attack at just 10 months old. At 8 years old, I swam an entire mile in one evening. Took a while as I recall. Around the turn of the century, having then worked in PC repair for 8 years, I built and ran a very popular PC building website which ran for about for around 15 years. It was then partially preserved by a forum member when I shut it down and still exists today on its original domain: www.buildyourown.org.uk.
